What was your inspiration for pursuing a job in STEM?
“When I started at Elon, I was a Spanish major! I was really passionate about it, but I soon realized I preferred the major itself over the kinds of jobs it would lead to. From there, I explored several other sociology-type majors. It was during a core requirement statistics class that I decided to switch to that major, and then I added Computer Science during coursework for the stats major. I succeeded in every field of study I pursued, but I think joining the Accelerate Success program gave me the confidence to stick it out in Statistics and Computer Science because it provided a clear vision of what I could achieve with those degrees.”
What was your favorite part of the Accelerate Success program while attending Elon University?
“My favorite part of Accelerate Success was the in-person sessions. I enjoyed learning about different STEM career paths, hearing about others’ experiences, and gaining advice from professionals. Having dinner together and spending time connecting with other participants made it easy to build friendships and a sense of community with women who shared similar goals and interests.”
How did Accelerate Success help you prepare for your career?
“The Accelerate Success program gave me practical skills that made the transition from college to my career much smoother. It helped me build a stronger resume and LinkedIn profile, prepare for interviews, and learn strategies for negotiating job offers. Just as importantly, it connected me with other ambitious women pursuing STEM careers, giving me a supportive community and helping me feel more confident and welcome in the field.”
Anna’s Advice
“Don’t let being one of the few women in your STEM classes make you question whether you belong. If you’re passionate about your major, you deserve to be there just as much as anyone else. Finding a supportive community of other women in STEM can make a huge difference by providing encouragement, confidence, and friendships throughout your journey.”
